Varying between the two couples.
The aforementioned Tyler Frey wrote the screenplay and stars in this gay version of the Kate Winslet/Cameron Diaz rom-com The Holiday. We review the new Hallmark Original movies, Hallmark Mysteries, Countdown to Christmas movies, and fan-favorite Hallmark movies – all year long.
You can expect fun, laughs, lots of questions and – as always – we ask ‘Did You See That?’ Want to see the library of movies we’ve reviewed?
The film features a heartwarming love story between Bennett’s character and Anand Desai-Barochia, bringing even more inclusive holiday romance to Hallmark’s growing lineup.
It’s harmless fun.
6) Clusterfünke Christmas (2021) – Paramount+, Roku, Amazon Prime
“A no-nonsense hotel exec buys a family inn in northern Maine, but the town’s Christmas spirit clashes with her cosmopolitan values.” This one’s actually a spoof of the genre written by and co-starring Rachel Dratch & Ana Gasteyer as the innkeepers.
☹
Romantic chemistry? Maybe I’m being a sap, but this couple grew on me.
The sequel to the above film. Bennett’s first major role years ago was in the movie Mean Girls. Yes, the Bros co-star is gay in real life, but the character in the film is not. Please give me a combination of humor, wit, romantic chemistry, decent acting and/or a plot twist and I’ll stick with it.
It’s an enjoyable movie but I don’t see these boys staying together. NONE.
A real-life gay couple with no chemistry try to find a hidden treasure… before it’s too late! Cheesy as it is, the premise is as sweet as it is predictable with plenty of fun, memorable scenes and unexpected moments thrown in.”
8) Single All The Way (2021) – Netflix
Older stars playing the parents: Kathy Najimy & Barry Bostwick with Jennifer Coolidge as the diva aunt.

Want more Megan and Wendy? If everyone’s so damn rich, why don’t they just give Frey the money to save the house? This one caused me to take a long break from viewing these movies. From early steps with supporting characters to groundbreaking titles like The Holiday Sitter and Friends & Family Christmas, LGBTQ+ Hallmark movies have proven that heartwarming, family-friendly romances can – and should – reflect the diversity of real relationships.
Still, there’s work to be done.
They break up and he invites his best friend home with him for Christmas to pretend they’re a couple. Rick Cosnett plays the Winslet role – a Brit transplanted in L.A. Maybe it’s the wine, but I found this one rather enjoyable.
12 & 13) Christmas on Cherry Lane / Season’s Greetings From Cherry Lane (2023/2024) – Hallmark +
There are actually four of these Cherry Lane Christmas movies – all are centered on the same house is different eras.
Her return suggests that Hallmark may once again place a stronger focus on inclusion as part of its programming strategy.
Hallmark’s Diversity Commitment: 2020-2025
Since 2020, Hallmark has made noticeable strides in LGBTQ+ representation, adding more visibility to gay, lesbian, and queer storylines:
- 2020: The Christmas House introduced Hallmark’s first same-sex couple, a milestone for LGBTQ+ Hallmark movies.
- 2021: Several films expanded roles for LGBTQ+ characters, moving beyond side plots and into meaningful storylines.
- 2022: The Holiday Sitter premiered as the first leading gay Hallmark movie, featuring Jonathan Bennett and George Krissa in a same-sex romance at the center of the story.
- 2023: Holiday standouts like Friends & Family Christmas (a lesbian Hallmark movie) and Christmas on Cherry Lane brought multiple LGBTQ+ lead couples to the screen.
- 2024–2025: Inclusive storytelling continued with original Hallmark+ series such as The Groomsmen and Holidazed, both featuring LGBTQ+ couples as core characters.
This progression shows how Hallmark has experimented with — and at times led — more inclusive programming, though the pace of new gay and lesbian Hallmark movies has slowed in recent years.
Latest LGBTQ+ Hallmark Movies (Updated 2025)
Hallmark has slowly expanded its inclusive storytelling over the past few years, with gay, lesbian, and LGBTQ+ romances appearing across holiday movies, original series, and even reality projects.
Hosted by Jonathan Bennett, the show spotlighted queer contestants and candid conversations about representation – an important step for LGBTQ+ visibility beyond scripted movies.

Inclusive love stories not only resonate with audiences, they strengthen the brand’s promise of celebrating love in all its forms.
We’re Your New Best Hallmark Friends
Hi, we’re Megan and Wendy!
"Single All The Way" (Netflix) is an example of a holiday rom-com centered on a gay couple, featuring a storyline about bringing a "fake" boyfriend home for the holidays, a classic genre trope.
Characteristics of Gay Hallmark-style Movies
These films generally retain the core elements that define the genre:
- Focus on Romance and Relationships: The central plot revolves around the development of a romantic relationship.
- Optimistic and Feel-Good Tone: They typically aim for heartwarming and uplifting narratives, often culminating in a happy ending.
- Familiar Tropes: Many employ established romantic comedy tropes, adapted for same-sex couples (e.g., returning to a small hometown, work-life balance conflicts leading to love, festive holiday settings).
- Emphasis on Family and Community: Acceptance and support from family and friends often play a significant role in the storyline.
Impact: The inclusion of gay protagonists and storylines in these widely accessible movies contributes to greater visibility and normalization of LGBTQ+ relationships in mainstream media.
