As far as we know, there will be 7 companions for you to romance. Critical comments range from downright insults and intolerance, to more a more measured tone with genuine attempts to explain why people feel the amount of LGBTQ content is excessive and ideas on how Larian could have done things differently.

Developed by Larian Studios, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a Dungeons & Dragons RPG that originated in the 1990s and hasn’t had a proper sequel in over 20 years. Joining you will be other survivors of the attack who also have the brain worms: human wizard Gale, half-elf cleric Shadowheart, high elf vampire rogue Astarion, human warlock Wyll, and githyanki fighter Lae’zel.

Like actual D&D, your choices will be constantly subject to the whim of a dice-roll, which is both terrifying and thrilling.

As a lifelong nerd and gamer, this series was always sort of hanging out in the periphery of the video game compartment in my mind, but last December I read a Reddit thread called WHY IS EVERYONE GAY IN BALDUR’S GATE 3, and I haven’t stopped being excited since then.

While I still mostly disagree with them, I do appreciate the people who made the effort to present their arguments, remained civil in our disagreements and at least exhibited a willingness to hear each other out.

There is not much I can say to people who think there should not be any LGBTQ content in the game. We know, we’re gutted too.

Can you be polyamorous in Baldur’s Gate 3?

It has also been confirmed that Baldur’s Gate 3 will feature polyamory, however just because you’re up for having more than one romance option doesn’t mean your lover feels the same.

All orientations can be present, but this way we get rid of the immersion-breaking coincidence of having 8 out of bi characters. And, frankly, I don’t have much time to dilly-dally. There orientation is what the players wants it to be of course.

For the custom player character every sub-race option defaults to either male or female with matching biological features.

I paraphrase it here for clarity, I am not trying to set up a straw man. But with the more moderate critics, one line of argumentation stands out to me and, while I disagree with it, it is only fair to meet it with reasonable arguments in reply.

There are some variations to this argument, and I sincerely hope that I do it justice here.

And I have to say, I have seen very little of it. A lot has changed since those early days, including the fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 — with its 174 hours of cut-scenes and 17,000 different possible endings — will now allow you to play as a gay and/or trans character, including being nonbinary and using they/them pronouns. Previous Baldur’s Gate games haven’t exactly been great at LGBTQ+ representation.

Therefore, they are all bi and having 8 out of 8 bi people in your party is so unlikely that it breaks immersion. All in all, Larian Studios have created a character creator that is vast and inventive. Some gay gamers really hate this mechanic because they want to see fully developed NPCs with gay storylines, and I totally get that, but I also have been rejected by CLEARLY BISEXUAL Cassandra in Dragon Age too many times to thumb my nose at the idea that every woman in the game could be a possible romance option for me.

So, there are 8 of them and according to critics, all 8 of them are bi.
