It’s messy, hilarious, and gayer than a brunch mimosa flight—and honestly, what more could you want?

But this rodeo is more than just sequins and bull semen. Contact the Animal Industry at (775) 688-1180 ext. Since then, NGRA has consistently hosted rodeo events. NGRA has supported organizations such as the Nevada Aids Project, Pedrigal House, Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN), Golden Rainbow, Reach Out, and others.

The BigHorn Rodeo is one of the largest events on the gay rodeo circuit.

In recent years, NGRA’s efforts have been formally recognized by the Governor of Nevada, the Nevada Attorney General, and the Mayor of Las Vegas. The goal was to hold an annual rodeo and complete Nevada’s gay rodeo history.

This dream was realized in June 1996 with the inaugural BigHorn Rodeo.

The Gymkhana was a non-sanctioned event designed to build experience for running a full-scale rodeo. You might just rope a cowboy of your own before the weekend is over. County authorities conduct routine inspections and violators are subject to fine and ejection from the rodeo grounds. NGRA also organizes annual local events such as the BigHorn Barrel Race, Royalty Pageant, Closet Ball, Cowboy Bingo, themed fundraising shows, raffles, auctions, special entertainment events, and supports the Annual Las Vegas Gay Pride festival.

Rodeo with the Nevada Gay Rodeo Association is about more than just sport; it’s about friendship, camaraderie, and fundraising for worthy causes, all while fostering unity within the gay and lesbian community.

Founded by a small group of country-western fans in February 1992, NGRA has seen rapid growth in both membership and recognition, culminating in full sanctioning by the International Gay Rodeo Association.

HISTORY

In 1992, seven men at the Badlands Saloon in Las Vegas were inspired to bring gay rodeo "home" to Nevada, where it all began.

The growing popularity of rodeos in the western U.S. and nationwide has helped NGRA become one of the fastest-growing member associations within IGRA. In addition, wash racks are available in the barn area.

There will be an on-site farrier during each rodeo performance. IGRA officials attended and supported NGRA’s efforts to sanction its first rodeo.

The BigHorn Rodeo serves up a side of campy chaos with events like steer decorating and the legendary wild drag race. The founders became the 13th membership delegation at the International Gay Rodeo Association (IGRA) convention in Minnesota, and the name change also honored Reno, NV, where gay rodeo began in 1976.

It took NGRA two years to host its first unofficial event, a Gymkhana at Horseman's Park in Las Vegas in June 1994.

This group—Bob Edwards, Randy Larson, Tom Blythe, Robert Kingham, Tom Tyre, Gary L'abbe, and Randy Parker—were close friends and experienced rodeo participants. Then get your ass to Las Vegas for the BigHorn Rodeo. It’s a space where queer cowboys, cowgirls, and every shade of the rainbow in between can come together to honor Western heritage while giving it a fierce, unapologetic makeover.

Over the years, NGRA has raised substantial funds for local charities.

Since 1996, NGRA has produced twenty-six BigHorn Rodeos. 230.
