There have been plenty of great artists, and then Marvin, in his own lane. When I made my first film with my brother, we were fortunate to get “What’s Going On” into the trailer for Menace 2 Society, and it was a game changer in elevating the marketing of that film. And I can’t play that character 100%. However, he also suffered from serious substance abuse issues that led to his adult life being plagued by paranoia and depression, including multiple suicide attempts, before he was ultimately shot and killed by his own father in April 1984 at the age of just 44.

The movie will reportedly be one of the costliest musical biopics ever made, and the single most expensive focusing on an African American artist, with the budget pegged at upwards of $80 million.

The “Iron Man” star, 56, shared the revelation on Sunday’s episode of Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.

The conversation turned to Gaye after Howard confessed the “biggest mistake” of his career was not portraying Smokey Robinson in a movie about the Motown icon. 

Though Robinson, 85, asked Howard to play him, the actor said he was in the midst of a “conversation with Lee Daniels about playing Marvin Gaye.” 

Maher, 69, argued that the narrative of the “Sexual Healing” hitmaker’s life was “much more interesting” than Robinson’s, and that Howard “would’ve been perfect as Marvin Gaye, and that is a story that needs to be told.”

However, Howard — who starred on Daniels’ TV series “Empire” — grew cold on Daniels’ biopic after a conversation with legendary record producer Quincy Jones. 

“I was over at Quincy Jones’ house and I’m asking Quincy, ‘I’m hearing rumors that Marvin was gay’ and I’m like, ‘Was he gay?’” Howard recalled asking Jones, who passed away in November. 

“And Quincy’s like, ‘Yes.’”

Howard then decided he “could not” star in Daniels’ movie.

“They would’ve wanted to do that, and I wouldn’t have been able to do that,” he said of portraying a gay person.

Maher interjected, “You mean you couldn’t kiss a guy on screen in a movie?” 

Howard replied, “No.

At the time, he said, he was in the middle of talks for the Gaye biopic and “was being faithful to Lee Daniels because I had given him my word as man.”

Howard said the news “broke [Robinson’s] heart,” while host Maher remarked that the exploration of Gaye’s life would have been “much more interesting” because “there’s a lot more drama,” given the What’s Going On artist’s killing by his father.

Given that neither project ended up coming to fruition, Howard explained that he was once at the late Quincy Jones’ house when the pioneering record producer confirmed Gaye’s sexuality.
