For me internally, as I was cutting the show, if there was a point where I couldn't watch it anymore, then I know we had gone too far. My favorite reviews are the ones that begin with, ‘This is the third time I've watched this episode and it gets worse every time I see it.' I'm like, that's a fan!

They were drunk and in pain and were using their sadness to pose one another as Jamie's replacements. You're trying to find this perfect balance between those two thoughts."

"Perfect," of course, is open to interpretation. "She had a really tough job because it was not like any other love scene that's been depicted on the show."

Due to its unique, unconventional nature, Berry said he would always look back on the scene and wonder if they could have done it differently.

"It's one of those moments in which I'll always look back and think, 'Could we have done more?' Because there are so many different ways to do it," he said, adding that he thought they "gave it a good crack."

"I was willing to push it as far as needed to go," he continued.

It was just about how we were going to do it."

As GOT fans are surely aware by now, Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) was never raped in George R.R. Martin's books—it was another outlying character, Jeyne Poole.

Where is the moment of violence going to happen? Add in the fact that William found out the truth about Jamie in Outlander season 7, episode 11, and the entire relationship between the Greys and Frasers is sure to get all the more challenging.

It was male rape, which hasn't really been show much.

This episode was particularly emotional since it followed the reveal that Jamie Fraser had been lost at sea and kicked off with Claire and Lord John's reluctant marriage. "Well, that's hard to say because in Outlander, it was so fundamental. Lord John is gay and has only been intimate with women out of obligation. It wasn't romantic, but the moment was effective.

Claire & Lord John's Intimacy Aided In Their Mourning

Their Strange Night Together Helped Them Take The Next Steps

Claire and Lord John sleeping together wasn't a particularly healthy choice.

The pair have become friends, sure, but there has always been a bit of tension between them, born from the fact that they both love Jamie (but can't both have him). What are their vulnerabilities? There was a part of her that was angry with her husband and herself, and she expressed that through her passion with her new husband.

Any fan response to something they love will always have outliers that hate it who still watch it over and over. We knew it was coming, so we spent a fair amount of time in the writers' room talking about the script and then once we had the scripts we set aside extra rehearsal time for the actors and the directors to go off and work by themselves.

It wasn't just physical torture, but psychological torture. But on the other side, I always try not to shy away from that and cheat it and make it so that it's prettier than it should be.
