22. As someone who also hates my hometown (albeit for much less traumatic reasons) I appreciated the built in redemption arc for both Delilah and her home of Bright Falls.

31. Rutkoski’s novel tackles divorce, abuse, and reconnection, but makes its mark in the subtle ways it shows rekindled love as a physical pull and a social mess.

  • ‘A Lady For A Duke’ by Alexis Hall

When Viscount Marleigh is injured during the war, Marleigh, then living as a man, takes the opportunity to fake her death and transition — leaving her entire life behind to enter the world as Lady Viola.

Lore and Bastian are both confident in their genderqueer-ness, and work on accepting their dyslexia and ADHD respectively over the course of the novel.

    8. But financial freedom — and its sudden departure — can’t actually change the brain chemistry that’s turning her waking hours into such a fraught, anxious mess. There’s gay sex, gender bending, and identity building in this fabulous series that puts a magical spin on ancient Chinese warfare.

    14.

I loved every minute of it, especially the way it allowed characters to find themselves and share that discovery with each other in their own time without the entire book devolving into a “coming out” novel. I truly cannot explain enough how deeply moving this book was. The answer, Mia hopes, will tell her whether she should leave her hometown to become a singer or stay with her (also gay!) grandmothers.

Every single character was fleshed out and felt real, and I absolutely adored every page.

    13. Then there's They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera, a modern tale that follows two boys who, knowing they have just one day to live, form an unforgettable bond, reminding readers to live life to the fullest and cherish each moment.

I love romances featuring two adults who find a second chance at love, work, and life. I definitely need to re-read at some point to see if it deserves to be this high up, but for now it is!

A lesbian and a gay man drift in and out of each other’s lives over the course of the years spanning from college through adulthood. Gen is an Olympic athlete full of confidence, and Emily is in the midst of an abusive, emotionally consuming marriage. You can read this instead. In the book, two 17 year old boys decide to break the world record for kissing.
