Other studies further elaborate on the many reasons for SMSM substance use, including:[vii]
- Substance use leads to disinhibition
- Substance use is used retrospectively to rationalize or justify one’s engagement in MSM behavior
- Substance use acts as a facilitator by allowing increased comfort when approaching another male for sexual activity
- Substance use intensifies the sexual experience
As the above research demonstrates, we have a much better understanding of the lived experiences of SMSM in comparison to a mere decade ago.
The answer lies in the understanding of sexual identity as distinct from sexual behavior. (n.d.). On the set, the two men had adjoining trailers, where they spent more time getting to know each other than in front of the camera. If a straight guy and his gay male friend are less rigid about their masculinity and sexuality, they’ll probably be more likely to discuss details about their sexual and romantic lives openly with one another.

Diversity of sexual orientation. In days past, this may have seemed as unlikely as a friendship between a lion and a mouse, given the traditionally high levels of homophobia among straight men.
But just as in Aesop’s fabled story of the unlikely lion-mouse friendship, sometimes being different can provide unique benefits that simply cannot be found in a friendship built on similarity.
Retrospective recall of sexual orientation identity development among gay, lesbian, and bisexual adults. McKie’s research reported that many men in bromosexual friendships report a deep level of intimacy and support within the friendship.
For gay men, friendship quality with a straight male friend was particularly high when the friendship pre-dated the gay man coming out.
Psychology of Men & Masculinities, 22(2), 277-287. Perhaps one of the reasons their friendship has drawn so much popular attention is the duality of their sexual identities.
McKellan is a gay man who came out in 1988, and although 33 years have passed since he came out, it can still be shocking to the world to see such a close same-sex friendship that crosses sexual identities.
Can Gay and Straight Men Be Friends?
As a graduate student, Raymond McKie was interested in learning more about friendships that crossed sexual identities.
This suggests that sexual behavior doesn’t always align with self-identified sexual orientation.
The National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior reports “While about 7% of adult women and 8% of men identify as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the proportion of individuals in the U.S. who have had same-gender sexual interactions at some point in their lives is considerably higher.”
Noted researcher Sabra L.
Katz-Wise writes, “As people experience the world and learn more about themselves, their views, beliefs, and feelings may change. Fluidity allows people to explore attractions and behaviors without needing to redefine their core sexual identity.
Fluidity and Self-Acceptance: Self-compassion and acceptance are essential for those navigating sexual fluidity.
The pressure to conform to heteronormative standards may cause men to downplay or dismiss these experiences as experimentation, reinforcing their self-conception as straight.
Navigating fluidity
There are labels such as “straight,” “gay,” “bisexual,” “pansexual,” “transgender,” “non-binary,” and “gender identity” that are all used to provide clarity and a sense of identity for many people.
But what if the men in question identify as heterosexual? Sexual fluidity and the diversity of sexual orientation.
We currently have a survey investigation underway that explores some of the positive outcomes of “bromosexual” friendships, including our theory that gay men and straight men can be optimal wing men for one another.
Breaking barriers
Friendships between gay and straight men have always existed. The boundaries between identity and behavior are complex, and recognizing the fluid nature of these experiences helps reduce the stigma or confusion surrounding them.
Therefore, in this blog, we will explore the following:
- The Concept of Sexual Identity
- Defining Heteroflexibility
- Research on Sexual Fluidity Among Straight Men
- Navigating Fluidity
- Encouraging Open Conversations
By exploring this topic, we can better appreciate the spectrum of human sexuality and the individuality of each person’s experience.
The concept of sexual identity
Sexual identity refers to how a person defines their own sexual orientation, such as straight, gay, bisexual, or other terms that reflect their self-conception.
From an early age, men are often socialized to adhere to rigid norms of heterosexuality and masculinity. Bisexuality: While heteroflexibility and bisexual men may seem similar, they are distinct.
